SARAH BATTAGLIA
Sarah Battaglia collects, draws, molds, and patiently shapes debris of organic origin. She scrutinizes the delicate link between the inert and the living, a mediator of mysteries, attuned to the wild and the connections between the visible and invisible worlds. The unsettling strangeness expressed in her work attempts to convey a formal exploration that creates and undoes bodies, relying on the process of Life/death/life that is always at work.
She favors mediums that invoke metamorphosis, such as drawing, printmaking, ceramics, knitting, and writing, as ways to engage in dialogue with matter or its absences, and with feminine archetypes that embody the unconscious connections to the living.
At Walden, Sarah intends to continue her observation and drawing work centered around butterfly eyespots, using local species (both diurnal and nocturnal).
