walden cabin

Walden Cabin is a site dedicated to artistic research and creative experiences, hidden in the woods between the villages of Oppede and Menerbes. It is a place for a temporary retreat and solitude.

When he lived in Walden, Henry David Thoreau praised his solitude but regularly broke it to visit his friends in the nearby village in order to share his wonderment, doubts and outcome of his meditations and thoughts. Similarly, the artists in residency in Walden Cabin will live between the woods and the surroundings, nourishing their research from the local environment.

Raphaële de Broissia was the first artist to stay at Walden Cabin in July 2022, followed by Vietnamese ceramics artists Tran Minh Thai and Bui Cong Khanh in 2023.

During the summer 2024, multimedia artist Sarah Battiglia will observe the local flora and butterflies.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. HD Thoreau
